Leadership Tip of the Week

Be Powerful!

When people work on articulating goals and they want to convince others in a certain direction they often say things like “We should do this,” “We have to do this” or “We must do this.”

They try to build their case based on external and/or internal circumstances. And, in most cases, their rationale for why they should, must and even can’t afford not to is completely valid and compelling.

However, as we all know people often don’t do what they should, must or have to. For example: we don’t eat or exercise as we should. And, we sure don’t behave or act the way we should in many personal and professional situations. So, by saying “we should” we keep the conversation theoretical, hypothetical and conceptual. And, it doesn’t compel anyone toward commitment and action.

If you want to have a more powerful conversation shift your conversation from “We should do this” to “We want to do this.” The shift from Should to Want to is a big step forward toward a more powerful conversation. “We should” is a description. But “We want” is a declaration of intent and commitment, therefore it takes the conversation beyond the hypothetical and theoretical. It connects people to their real commitment and compels and inspires them to start considering action.

If someone says “I should do this” people will nod their heads and agree. But, if someone says “I want to do this” people may say “So, what are you going to do about it?” It takes the level of personal ownership to a new level.

The most powerful conversation is when people say “We will do this.” If “We should do this” is a description, “We want to do this” is a declaration, “We will do this” is a promise. And, that is the ultimate conversation for driving action.

In conclusion, in order to drive powerful conversations I recommend you:

  1. Stay away from “We should do x, y, z.”
  2. Steer the conversation toward “We want to do x, y, z.”
  3. And then, from there, close with “We will do x, y, z.”

Development target

Are you developing your team and for the right reasons?

As COVID progresses, leaders need to continue to develop their teams. In fact, in some cases, team development may be more important than ever. It seems that the leaders who developed their teams before COVID continue to do so with extra passion, while those who didn't invest in development before or did it sporadically and/or poorly, continue in the same way. Which category are you in? Are you developing your team?
Will you lead or lag the virtual revolution?

Will you lead or lag the virtual revolution?

Just like the smartphone revolutionized the way we live and do business, it is inevitable that COVID will transform the way corporations work and do their business. Why is this transformation inevitable? Survival is a very powerful instinct. COVID very abruptly required companies to shift the way they manage their employees and customers, and the way they conduct their business.
